Furthermore, growing concerns over rising petrol and diesel prices, the launch of new models, and increased public awareness all played a pivotal role in accelerating this growth. However, a decline in sales when compared to the previous month (March) signaled that the road ahead may not be entirely smooth.

Why Did Sales Decline After March?

While April witnessed a spectacular increase in sales on a year-on-year basis, a month-on-month comparison revealed a decline: electric car sales dropped per cent, and electric two-wheeler sales fell by 23 per cent. A major reason for this was the surge in purchasing activity observed in March, driven by consumer apprehension that government subsidies might be discontinued. Subsequently, the government extended this subsidy scheme; however, the impact of those advance purchases made in March is clearly reflected in the sales figures for April.

Who Dominates the Electric Car Segment?

In the electric vehicle market, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and JSW MG Motor continued to maintain a dominant position. Collectively, these three companies captured approximately 82 per cent of the total market share. Kia Motors also made a significant entry into the segment, driven by its new electric MPV, the ‘Kia Carens Clavis’; the company successfully boosted its sales from 34 units to 341 units, pushing its market share up to 1.5 per cent.

A Major Setback for Ola Electric

For Ola Electric—which was once the market leader—the month of April proved to be quite disappointing. The company’s sales plummeted by 38 percent, dropping to just 12,166 units. Consequently, its market share shrank from 21 per cent to 1 per cent.

Similarly, Kinetic Green also experienced a sharp decline in sales, which fell by 49 per cent to reach 666 units. Meanwhile, Ather Energy witnessed sales of 27,024 units, registering a remarkable growth of 102%. The company has successfully established a strong foothold in the market, driven by its network of over 700 sales representatives and its affordable models.
