Elon Musk is going to give Rs 8,539 crore to Wikipedia – but only if they agree to this condition
Tesla CEO and world's richest man Elon Musk is once again in the news with his bold and unconventional ideas. This time, they are rekindling the old proposal of renaming Wikipedia to “Dikipedia” for $1 billion (about Rs 8,539 crore). Musk's proposal has certainly caught the internet's attention.
A user named Doge Designer, who frequently follows Musk on X (formerly Twitter), shared a post recalling Musk's previous proposal. This is why this story resurfaced. “Elon Musk once offered Wikipedia $1 billion to change its name to ‘Wikipedia’,” the post said. Musk responded to the post, confirming, “This proposal still stands.”
Criticism of Wikipedia's fundraising by Elon Musk
In 2023, Elon Musk openly criticized Wikipedia and its parent company, the Wikimedia Foundation. He questioned his fundraising efforts. On X he posted, “Have you ever wondered why the Wikimedia Foundation asks for so much money? It is not required to run Wikipedia. You can fit all the text on your phone! So, what is the money for? People are curious to know…”
Following his criticism, Musk made his infamous offer: “I'll give them a billion dollars if they change their name to 'Dikipedia,'” adding that it would be “in the interest of accuracy.”
