Emergency landing of Delhi-Mumbai Air India flight, technical fault in engine

Another Air India plane has made an emergency landing. An Air India spokesperson said that flight AI887 from Delhi to Mumbai on December 22 was landed back at Delhi airport as per standard operating procedure due to a technical glitch after take-off.

However, the plane landed safely in Delhi and the passengers and crew members came out of the plane safely. Immediately after take-off on Monday morning, one of the engines of the plane stopped, after which it had to land back in Delhi. Since twin-engine aircraft can land safely even on one engine, VT-ALS returned to Delhi without incident. According to flight tracking sites, the plane took off for Mumbai as AI 887 at 6.10 am and returned around 6.52 am.

What information did the airline provide?

An Air India spokesperson said, “On December 22, the crew of flight AI 887 from Delhi to Mumbai, as per standard operating procedure, decided to return to Delhi immediately after take-off due to a technical glitch. The aircraft landed safely in Delhi and passengers and crew have been deboarded. Air India sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience caused due to this unexpected situation.”

The airline also said that necessary checks of the aircraft are being carried out and the Air India ground team in Delhi is providing immediate assistance to the passengers and alternative arrangements have been made to reach their destination soon.

Such cases are continuously coming in Air India

On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed after take-off from Ahmedabad to London. There were 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board this plane. Out of which only one person’s life could be saved. After this accident, all the airlines are taking care of safety, yet the series of emergency landings in Air India is not stopping.
