End of Justin Trudeau era? Here’s why Canadian PM was asked to resign by his own party MPs- The Week
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been given an ultimatum to step down by October 28. And it is not the opposition leaders who issued the deadline but the MPs from his own Liberal party.
Why did Liberal MPs ask Justin Trudeau to resign?
At least 24 of the 153 Liberal MPs have been meeting secretly to oust Trudeau in a bid to save their party from a potential poll debacle. Public opinion surveys have suggested that under Trudeau’s leadership, the Liberals are likely to face a fiasco.
This comes after after the Liberal Party was defeated in two safest constituencies in special polls held in June and September. The MPs are also not happy with the preparations for the upcoming elections, which must be held before October 2025.
Trudeau has been heading the government for almost a decade. However, his popularity has sunk to all-time low with rival Conservatives leading over Liberals by 19 points. Fearing a setback in the elections, 24 MPs inked a document seeking Trudeau’s ouster, asking hims to rethink his pledge to stay in power.
A visibly upset Trudeau explained how his political career have take a toll on his three children and that he would need some time to look into the concerns of the MPs.
However, when he met reporters, all he said was that “the Liberal Party is strong and united”.
