End-to-end encryption removed from Instagram? Will Meta now be able to read your private messages: – ..
News India Live, Digital Desk: Social media platform Instagram is going to make a major reshuffle in its privacy settings. According to reports, Meta has banned Instagram direct messages (DM) under certain circumstances. End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) indicated to be removed or limited. As soon as this news came out, users were worried wondering whether their private chats would no longer be safe.
What is the whole matter? (Why Meta is changing policy)
End-to-end encryption means that no one other than the sender and the recipient of the message (even a company) can read it. But some concrete reasons are being given behind this new step of Meta:
Government pressure and security: Governments of many countries, including India, are demanding ‘backdoors’ or access to encryption for online security and to prevent criminal activities.
Logic of AI Training: There is also talk that Meta wants to analyze user data to improve its AI models, although the company has not officially linked it to message reading.
Reported chats: Under the new update, if a user ‘reports’ a chat, Meta will have access to that particular chat so they can investigate any violations.
Will Meta be able to read your messages? (Can they see your DMs?)
It is very important to understand the situation here. META hasn’t eliminated encryption entirely, but has made some changes:
Change default settings: Now users may have to choose the ‘Encrypted Chat’ option themselves, whereas earlier it was the default for many users.
Meta’s side: The company says that they are still committed to user privacy, but they need some data access to strengthen ‘safety features’.
Ads and Algorithms: A major impact of removing encryption can be that you may be shown targeted ads on Instagram based on the keywords of your chat.
How to protect your privacy? (Tips to stay safe)
Use Vanishing Mode: Use ‘Vanish Mode’ for sensitive conversations, where messages are automatically deleted after being read.
Two-Factor Authentication: Always keep two-factor authentication on to increase the security of your account.
Read Privacy Policy: Go to Instagram’s ‘Settings’, read the new privacy policy carefully and see what permissions you have allowed.
