News India Live, Digital Desk: The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important waterways on the global energy map, through which a major part of India’s energy requirements pass. Due to the ongoing tension between Iran and Israel, the Indian Government has increased its activism regarding the security of Indian tankers in this region.1. Why is Hormuz important for India? Lifeline of Energy: India imports most of its crude oil and LPG needs from Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE). All this cargo reaches Indian ports only through the Strait of Hormuz. Fear of LPG crisis: Any kind of military movement near Iran’s Kharg island can directly affect India’s LPG supply network. 2. Indian Navy’s ‘Operation Sankalp’ Indian Navy has deployed its state-of-the-art warships and surveillance systems to secure the sea lanes: INS Shivalik: This guided-missile frigate is patrolling the region to protect Indian merchant ships. INS Nanda Devi: Deployed for supply and logistics support, this ship is helping maintain the operational capability of the Indian fleet. Surveillance: P-8I The entire maritime area is being monitored round the clock through (P-8I) reconnaissance aircraft and drones.3. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s stance. Jaishankar has made it clear that India is in favor of peace in this region. He said, “Maritime security is our top priority. We are in touch with all concerned parties (including Iran) to ensure that international trade and energy supplies are not disrupted.”4. Key Strategic Points Kharg Island: It is the main oil export terminal of Iran. Any kind of siege or attack around it could lead to a huge surge in global oil prices. Alternative route: India is now also considering other sea routes and use of Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) to deal with any emergency.
