England pacer Jofra Archer feels that the Indian batters were ‘extremely lucky’ following The Three Lions’ heavy defeat in the first T20I held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

While Archer managed to pick up 2 wickets, India batters ensured that the game became a one-sided affair with Abhishek Sharma smashing 79 runs off just 34 deliveries. Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma also played decent cameos of 26 and 19 respectively as the Men in Blue cruised to a 7-wicket victory with 43 deliveries left to spare.

However, Archer believes that things would have turned out differently for his side if the India batters’ miscued shots didn’t end up falling in no man’s land.

“I guess the conditions just favoured me a little bit more than the other bowlers. The other bowlers bowled well, but the batters were extremely lucky. A few balls, well a lot of balls, went up in the air but didn’t go to hand and probably next game they all go to hand and they’re 40 for six,” Archer said.

“It’s just important to keep the head up, this happens a lot in India, especially in the IPL. The batters go hard, the bowlers go hard and we were just on the unlucky side of it,” Archer added.

“Yeah, you’ve always got to try in the beginning, because if you get them three or four down in the power play then usually teams bat differently in the middle. The only way you’re going to know is if you try. We gave it a try, it didn’t work, so we will try again next game,” Archer further said.

The second T20I of the 5-match series between India and England will be held on January 25, Saturday. The clash will take place at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
