Eric Dane dies at 53 after battle with ALS

Hollywood actor Eric Dane died on Thursday, February 19, nearly a year after publicly revealing his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 53.

In a statement shared with People magazine, his family confirmed that he passed away surrounded by loved ones. “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the statement read.

What Is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disease gradually causes patients to lose muscle control, impacting their ability to move, speak, eat and eventually breathe. There is currently no cure.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) reports that many patients live three to five years after diagnosis. About 30% survive beyond five years, while 10 to 20% live for more than a decade. Survival beyond 20 years is rare.

The Mayo Clinic notes that respiratory failure is the leading cause of death among ALS patients, with some living 14 to 18 months following diagnosis. Approximately 5,000 Americans are diagnosed with ALS each year, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Eric Dane’s Fight and Advocacy

Best known for his role in the hit television series Grey’s Anatomy, Dane publicly disclosed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. Rather than stepping away from public life, he chose to use his platform to raise awareness and push for research funding.

During a virtual panel for I AM ALS, his final public appearance, Dane emphasized the importance of speaking openly about the disease.

“I make sure that people are aware of what ALS is and what it’s about, and more importantly, what we can do to combat it and improve the landscape,” he said, highlighting the bureaucratic and research challenges facing the ALS community.

He also spoke candidly about his motivation.

“I have two daughters at home,” he shared. “I want to see them graduate college, get married and maybe have grandkids. I want to be there for all that. So I’m going to fight to the last breath on this one.”

I AM ALS described him as “a fierce advocate” who used his platform “not for attention, but for action,” noting that his involvement in congressional efforts and research funding initiatives would leave a lasting impact.

Eric Dane may have lost his battle with ALS, but through his advocacy and determination, he ensured the fight for awareness, funding and solutions will continue.
