Escalation in Ukraine war: Russia reports large-scale strike using long-range precision weapons
Russia’s Defence Ministry said it carried out a large-scale overnight attack on targets across Ukraine, claiming that high-precision long-range weapons were used to strike facilities linked to Ukraine’s defence industry.
According to statements carried by Russian news agencies, the operation targeted military-industrial infrastructure and defence-related facilities. The ministry said the strikes were conducted using precision-guided weapons aimed at degrading Ukraine’s military production capabilities and logistical support network.
Russian officials described the operation as a “massive overnight strike,” though they did not immediately provide a detailed list of the locations hit or the extent of the damage caused. The claims could not be independently verified, and Ukrainian authorities were still assessing the impact of the latest wave of attacks.
The announcement comes amid an intensifying phase of the more than four-year conflict, with both Russia and Ukraine increasingly targeting strategic military, industrial and energy infrastructure far from the front lines. In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have reported successful drone strikes against Russian energy facilities, refineries and logistics infrastructure, while Moscow has vowed continued retaliation against what it describes as attacks on Russian territory.
The latest Russian operation follows warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that intelligence assessments indicated a heightened risk of a major Russian missile and drone attack. Ukrainian authorities had urged citizens to remain alert and follow air raid warnings as concerns over a large-scale assault grew in recent days.
Reports from Ukraine indicated that multiple regions came under attack during the night. Emergency services were deployed to several affected areas following explosions, fires and damage to civilian and infrastructure sites. Ukrainian officials reported casualties and injuries in some regions, while rescue operations continued in areas where buildings were damaged.
The Russian Defence Ministry maintained that the targets were military and defence-industrial facilities, a claim that aligns with previous statements issued by Moscow during earlier waves of long-range strikes. Russian authorities have repeatedly argued that such attacks are intended to weaken Ukraine’s military capabilities and disrupt weapons production and logistics.
The latest exchange of attacks highlights the continued escalation in the conflict, with both sides increasingly relying on drones, missiles and long-range strike capabilities. Despite ongoing international diplomatic efforts, there has been no significant breakthrough toward ending the war, and military operations remain intense across multiple sectors.
As of Tuesday, Ukrainian authorities had not released a comprehensive assessment of the damage linked specifically to the targets cited by Russia, while independent verification of battlefield claims from either side remained difficult due to the ongoing hostilities.
The situation continues to develop, with further official statements expected from both Moscow and Kyiv in the coming hours.
