The voice of Pakistani minorities reached Europe… EU slammed Shahbaz government on forced religious conversion of girls
EU Parliament Pakistan Resolution: According to a recent report, the European Parliament has passed a resolution demanding Pakistan authorities to stop the incidents of kidnapping and forced conversion of girls from religious minority communities to Islam. The resolution cited UN data for 2025, saying that about 25 percent of victims in cases related to forced religious conversion and marriage are Christian girls.
Members of the European Parliament urged Pakistan to create a comprehensive national framework to end child marriage and a national mechanism to deal with the complaints of families of girls from minority communities who have been abducted or forcibly converted.
Maria Shahbaz case mentioned in the report
Expressing its concern, the European Parliament also mentioned the case of 13-year-old Christian girl Maria Shahbaz. According to the proposal, Maria was allegedly abducted in July 2025 by 30-year-old Shehryar Ahmed, who is accused of forcibly converting her to Islam and marrying her.
The MPs also mentioned the legal proceedings related to this matter. He said that despite alleged manipulation of official documents and evidence that the girl was a minor, the Federal Constitutional Court of Pakistan ruled in favor of the accused and returned the child to her.
Criticism of Pakistani court’s decision
The European Parliament strongly criticized the court’s decision and demanded that Maria Shahbaz be provided with legal aid and mental health support so that she can recover from this difficult experience.
1,000 girls are becoming victims every year
The resolution also said that according to human rights organizations’ estimates, more than 1,000 minors from minority communities face such atrocities every year. The European Parliament also expressed concern over allegations that local authorities sometimes collude in such cases, while courts ignore child protection laws, thereby encouraging or legitimizing forced conversions.
