What is Cricket's European T20 Premier League? In which Abhishek Bachchan is also an investor
Delhi: There is a big discussion about the news that Abhishek Bachchan is investing in the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) and hence has become one of the owners of the league. The thing to note is that Abhishek did not buy any team of the league – he is one of the owners of the league. The most important issue here is that what is this ETPL and what are the special things related to it? So let's know about this league:
-ETPL is a professional T20 cricket league and is recognized by the ICC.
-It will be organized in Europe only.
-Its three big partners are the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands.
-The first season of the tournament is being played in 2025.
-Yet this tournament has a history. In fact, in March 2019, Cricket Scotland, Cricket Ireland and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association jointly announced the creation of an 8-team, new cross-border European T20 professional franchise tournament, the Euro T20 Slam. It was to be played in August 2019 and a players draft was also organized for it. The professional firm that was given the contract to help organize the event was also responsible for the Global T20 tournament in Canada. Due to various reasons these tournaments were not played and on top of that Covid 19 made further mess. The result was that the tournament was considered so 'unlucky' that it was stopped forever without being played even once. Now the same tournaments are being played with a new brand, name and structure.
-A total of 6 teams from the three partner countries: Dublin, Belfast, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Edinburgh and Glasgow will play.
-This year this tournament will be played from 15th July to 3rd August. The date was decided in such a way that there is no conflict with IPL, America and Caribbean franchise tournaments but there is conflict with ECB's 'The Hundred'.
-A strategic partner Rules Sports Tech has been taken on board to help in organizing the event. For finance and administration, a committee has been formed for each board and its representatives, whose chief is Warren Deutrom. Also KPMG are league advisors.
-The aim of officially starting ETPL is to bring out new talent and entertain cricket fans around the world.
-In addition to the players from the partner 3 countries, other international cricketers will also play. The proof of cricket's increasing popularity in Europe is that currently 34 out of 108 ICC members are from this region.
-Search is going on for media partner for the tournament.
-The organizers hope that with Abhishek Bachchan becoming an investor in the league, the attractiveness of the league will increase in India. Abhishek is also among the owners of Kabaddi team Jaipur Pink Panthers and Indian Super League (ISL) football club Chennaiyin FC.
Only time will tell what place does this league get in the growing number of T20 leagues?
