EV Weight: The trend of electric vehicles has increased rapidly in the last few years. Today almost every big auto company is launching battery operated vehicles in the market. But with this a question comes in the mind of every common buyer, why are EV cars so much heavier than petrol-diesel vehicles? And is this weight a disadvantage or advantage for you?
Battery became the biggest reason
The biggest reason for the high weight of EVs is their battery pack. High-energy lithium-ion batteries are installed in these vehicles, which are quite heavy. According to reports, the weight of a 50 kWh LFP battery can be around 300 to 500 kg.
For example, the electric Hyundai Creta weighs about 1,577 kg, which is about 35% more than its petrol or diesel versions. At the same time, Carens Clavis EV is also said to be about 40% heavier than its ICE version.
Companies trying to lose weight like this
Auto companies are now working on new technologies to reduce this extra weight. The use of light and strong materials is increasing in place of traditional iron and steel. Composite materials made of plastic and glass fiber are now being used increasingly, which are light as well as durable. Apart from this, lightweight audio systems and speakers are being installed in the vehicles, which reduces the overall weight and improves the driving range.
Disadvantages too, but tension ends after hearing the benefits
The high weight of EVs also brings some challenges. As braking distances increase slightly, tires may wear quicker and handling may feel a little less agile. But its benefits are also no less. The heavy battery strengthens the grip of the vehicle, which improves the grip on the road. Also, the battery is installed at the bottom, due to which the center of gravity of the vehicle remains low, this makes the vehicle more stable and the risk of overturning is reduced.

The regenerative braking system found in EVs stores energy back in the battery, thereby increasing efficiency. Also, heavy vehicles provide better safety to the passengers in case of an accident.
Is EV right for common people?
Overall, companies are definitely trying to reduce the weight of EVs, but at present this extra weight also gives benefits in many cases, especially in those vehicles which are being designed for the common people.
