‘Even a chameleon should feel shy!’ Why did CM Yogi say such a big thing to Mata Prasad Pandey in the Assembly?

The stir in the special session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly intensified when Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took on the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress on the issue of women’s reservation. During the heated debate in the House, CM Yogi took a dig at the changed stand of the opposition and said that even a chameleon should feel embarrassed seeing the speed with which SP is changing its colours.

Opposition’s uproar and CM’s counterattack

The special session of the UP Assembly had a stormy start. Even before the House proceedings began, SP MLAs demonstrated strongly outside the premises demanding immediate implementation of women’s reservation. Leader of Opposition in the House, Mata Prasad Pandey demanded that a proposal be presented on this issue before discussion. Countering this, the Chief Minister said that the discussion has not even started yet and why is the opposition looking so impatient?

Questions raised on the old stance of SP and Congress

Referring to the history of Women’s Reservation Bill, CM Yogi targeted SP and Congress. He said that when this bill was presented in Delhi (Parliament), these same parties had opposed it, but as soon as they reached Lucknow, their tone changed. The CM sarcastically looked at Mata Prasad Pandey and said, “Seeing this double conduct of the Samajwadi Party, even a chameleon will feel ashamed as to who has come, who is changing colors even faster than her.”

Account of work done for half the population

In his address, the Chief Minister gave details of the schemes run for the welfare of women since 2014. Referring to Ujjwala scheme, Jan Dhan account and construction of toilets, he said that this session is completely dedicated to ‘half the population’. While sharing the data, Yogi Adityanath said that after the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ passed by the Central Government, today the number of women in the Parliament is 15 percent, whereas in the UP Assembly it is still only 11-12 percent. He stressed that if it is increased to 33 percent, women will be able to get their real rights.

Accused of being anti-women

CM Yogi termed the old behavior of SP, Congress, TMC and DMK as anti-women. He said that these parties have not learned any lesson from the defeat. According to the CM, the parties that call themselves socialist have never been serious towards women. He asked that when there was protest in the Parliament, then why is the drama of demanding reservation being done here?
