“Even if Washington Sundar picks up seven wickets, I would still say that Kuldeep Yadav was a better option for the second Test against New Zealand”: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra is not happy with Team India’s decision to field Washington Sundar instead of Kuldeep Yadav in the second Test against New Zealand. The hosts benched Kuldeep and added the Tamil Nadu spinner to the playing XI.

Washington was not in the original squad, but the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee decided to include him after the home team lost the opening game by 8 wickets in Bengaluru.

In the last Ranji Trophy match against Delhi, Sundar scored a hundred. Captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted to target the left-handers in the New Zealand line-up, and Washington was given the task.

“Even if Washington Sundar takes seven wickets in the second Test, I would still say that Kuldeep Yadav was a better option. Kuldeep can also take the ball away from the left-handers, and he has more variations than Washington,” Aakash Chopra said in JioCinema.

For the record, Washington proved Aakash wrong, as he took seven wickets.

Rachin Ravindra (65), Daryl Mitchell (18), Tom Blundell (3), Glenn Phillips (9), Tim Southee (5), Ajaz Patel (5) and Mitchell Santner (33) were dismissed by Sundar. Ravichandran Ashwin got rid of three batters as New Zealand were bowled out for 259.
