Everest winning mountaineer Bhavana Dehariya will get Vikram Award, High Court rejected the petition and lifted the stay.

Indore: The path has now been cleared for mountaineer Bhavna Dehariya, who brought glory to Madhya Pradesh by conquering Mount Everest, to receive the Vikram Award. Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday rejected the petition challenging his selection. The court upheld the decision of the state government.

High Court removed the stay

Rejecting the petition, Justice Prannoy Verma, while giving the order, said that the decision taken by the state government for the adventure sports category of 2023 is in accordance with the rules and there is no error in it. Important information was shared by Advocate Anunay Srivastava, who appeared for Bhavna Dehariya in the case. At the same time, Deputy Advocate General Shreya Raj Saxena effectively presented the case on behalf of the state government, which was accepted by the court.

Senior mountaineer Madhusudan had filed a petition

Actually, this petition against the award was filed by Madhusudan Patidar, in which he claimed that he is senior to Bhavna Dehariya and he should get the award. However, the court found that Patidar’s Everest climb was in the year 2017, which is outside the five-year eligibility period prescribed as per the Madhya Pradesh Award Rules, 2021. According to Rule 5, only achievements of the last five years can be recognized in the Adventure Sports category.

The court rejected the petition and lifted the stay.

On this basis, the court said that Patidar was not eligible for the award for the year 2023, hence his claim was rightly rejected. The court also clarified that the process of inviting applications by the state government has been in accordance with the rules in the years 2021, 2022 and 2023, therefore the allegation of inadequate information or not giving notice is also not sustainable. After the petition was found “insubstantial”, there is no longer any obstacle in conferring the Vikram Award on Bhavna Dehariya. The state government will soon honor him in an official function.

Mountaineer Bhavana is a resident of Chhindwara.

Bhavana Dehariya, a resident of Tamia village in Chhindwara district, has hoisted the Indian tricolor on the five continental highest peaks of the world, which include—
