Everyone will have to come together to maintain law and order in Bangladesh: Rahman

Dhaka. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting president Tariq Rahman, in his first address on his return to Dhaka after a gap of 17 years, on Thursday urged the countrymen to come together to maintain law and order.

Whatever political party we belong to, whatever religion we believe in, even if we are not affiliated with any party – we all should unite to maintain law and order, he told party supporters after arriving on Dhaka’s July 36 Expressway from the airport. Rahman has made this appeal amid the widespread discontent and political instability after the assassination of prominent youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi in Bangladesh. Hadi was a prominent face in the mass protests last year that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s government. Rehman (60), son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has emerged as the main contender for the post of Prime Minister in the elections. Referring to American civil rights activist Martin Luther King’s famous quote “I Have a Dream,” Rahman said, “I have a plan for my people and my country,” the state-run Bangladesh Sangabad Sangstha reported.

Rahman said, this scheme is in the interest of the people, for the development of the country, and to change the destiny of the country. To implement this scheme, I need the support of all the people of the country. If you stand with us, Inshallah, we will be able to implement our plan. He said that he wants to create a safe Bangladesh where people can live in a peaceful environment without any distinction of caste, creed and faith. He said, there are people from hilly and plain areas in our country. There are Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians. We want to create a safe Bangladesh, where every woman, man and child can leave their homes safely and return safely. He appealed to people to pray for his ailing mother and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. He will visit Zia at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka after leaving the venue. Jiya, who has been Prime Minister three times, is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. Former Prime Minister Hasina’s party Awami League has been banned from contesting elections, hence BNP’s position seems strong in the elections to be held in February.
