Elections in India of EVM For the first time since its introduction, the post-election audit has started. Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan has ordered the EVM inspection. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will inspect the EVMs in the presence of senior Congress leader and former minister Arif Naseem Khan. Khan has challenged the results of the Chandivali assembly elections. Khan lost the election to Shiv Sena MLA Dilip Lande.

On February 12, the High Court ordered an inspection of the EVMs. After the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi had also accused EVM tampering and vote theft. The court said that the Election Commission should complete the inspection of the EVMs within two months after the approval of the applicant.

For the first time in the history of elections

The court said that this type of inspection of EVMs in the presence of candidates and other officials has never been done before in India. Deputy Electoral Officer of Mumbai Suburban District Archana Kadam said that this “diagnostic check” will be held on April 16 and 17. The Congress party had asked its candidates to request inspection of EVM and VVPAT units in their respective constituencies.

Supreme Court Says

Naseem Khan cited the Supreme Court’s April 2024 judgment, which said that at least 5% of EVMs (Control Units, VVPAT and Ballot Units) in each constituency should be inspected by EVM manufacturing companies and engineers for burnt memory and microcontrollers after declaration of election results. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Khan said, “This is an important decision.” No court has ordered an EVM audit before. This is the first order of its kind and we welcome it. Khan said at least 20 EVMs will be audited.

Shiv Sena’s Dilip Bhausaheb Lande got a total of 1,24,641 votes in Chandivali constituency. Mohammad Arish Naseem Khan was second with 1,04,016 votes. In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Mahayuti Aghadi won 230 out of 288 seats. BJP was the largest party with 132 seats. Shiv Sena (UBT) won 20, NCP (SP) 10 and Congress 16.
