Ex-cricketer accuses Gambhir of taking a swipe at Rohit and Virat following T20 World Cup 2026 final

Former England bowler Steve Harmison feels that Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, may have targeted Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma following India’s dominant 96-run win against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 final. After securing the title, Gambhir commended the team for prioritising the collective goal over individual milestones, emphasising the selflessness displayed by the players.

Gambhir specifically mentioned Sanju Samson, noting that his big-hitting approach resulted in scores just shy of a century in both the semifinal and the final. Despite scoring over 85 + runs in three consecutive matches, Samson couldn’t convert any of them into a three-figure score.

In a conversation on the talkSPORT Cricket YouTube channel, Harmison suggested that Gambhir’s comments could be interpreted as a critique of Kohli and Rohit.

“I found that interesting from Gambhir. It seemed like a dig at Rohit and Virat, with him mentioning how it’s about the team’s success, not personal milestones. I’ve my doubts about Gautam, but I did appreciate his little jab at Rohit and Virat.”

Both players were part of India’s victorious 2024 T20 World Cup team before announcing their retirements from T20Is. They are now only active in the ODI format, having also retired from Test cricket in mid-2025.

Harmison expressed interest in how Gambhir’s remarks about ‘milestones’ might affect Kohli and Rohit when they return to the Indian squad for the ODIs. Kohli and Rohit rank second and third among Indian players for the most centuries, with Kohli on 85 and Rohit on 50. Together, the duo has accumulated a remarkable 87 ODI centuries, with Kohli holding the record for the most centuries at 54.

“It will be interesting to see how they react when they return to the 50-over dressing room soon and hear those comments. He’s earned some praise now, having just won a trophy,” he added.
