Ex-girlfriend accidentally throws away hard drive full of Bitcoin worth Rs 5,900 crore
Delhi Delhi. James Howells There is a new twist in the decade-old saga of the tragedy of losing Bitcoin. Welsh IT engineer James Howells accidentally lost a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoins, now worth around Rs 5,900 crore (£569 million).
According to the recent incident, there has been a new twist in the story. In a recent interview with MailOnline, his former partner, Hafina Eddy-Evans, admitted that she was the one to throw away the hard drive during a routine household clean nearly a decade ago.
The story of the tragedy of losing Bitcoin began over a decade ago, when James Howells assigned a routine task to his then-partner, Hafina Eddy-Evans. They asked him to take out some trash, including a black bag containing an unimportant computer hard drive. Little was known about Bitcoin at the time, but unfortunately the unknown digital currency in that device held the digital keys to a huge fortune: 8,000 Bitcoins were extracted by Howells in 2009.
In a recent interview with MailOnline, Eddy-Evans broke his silence on the infamous landfill mystery. “He begged me to take a bag of trash to the trash can. I didn't know what was inside,” she said, defending her actions. According to her, she reluctantly threw away the bag even though she was on her way to school for her children.
Now, years later, Eddy-Evans has no share in the potential windfall. “I hope he gets over it, not that I want a penny. I just want him to stop talking about it,” she said, admitting that the saga had taken a toll on her mental health. Has made a bad impact. For more than a decade, Howells has been embroiled in a legal battle with the Newport City Council. They claim the council is preventing them from accessing the landfill, where the hard drives are now buried under 100,000 tonnes of waste.
