Ex-IPS officer Shivdeep Lande faces double defeat in assembly polls- The Week

Former IPS officer Shivdeep Wamanrao Lande, who contested the Bihar assembly elections as an independent from both Araria and Jamalpur, failed to secure a win in either of these seats.

Hailed as ‘Bihar’s Singham’ for his fearless policing and bold actions, Lande finished far behind the major party candidates in both seats, despite garnering wide public attention for his electoral debut.

In Jamalpur, JD(U)’s Nachiketa Mandal pulled off a commanding win over IIP candidate Narendra Kumar, while in Araria, Congress candidate Abidur Rahman defeated JD(U)’s Shagufta Azim.

Lande, 49, hails from a farming family in Maharashtra’s Akola district. The 2006-batch IPS officer was dubbed a super cop by his colleagues for his strong decisions and rapport with the public during his police career, especially when he was the Patna Superintendent of Police.

An Electronics Engineering graduate, Lande married Mamta Shivtare, the daughter of former Maharashtra Water Resources and Conservation Minister Vijay Shivtare.

The officer took voluntary retirement from service last year to take a political plunge. Earlier this year, he launched a party, the Hind Sena, and vowed to serve his ‘karmabhoomi’, Bihar. He is now living at Bankipur, a suburb of Patna.

According to his election affidavit, Lande has no criminal cases against him and has assets worth Rs 20.74 lakh. His wife, Mamta, is a businessperson and has assets worth Rs 20.50 crore. This includes a Land Cruiser SUV worth Rs 60 lakh, a Mahindra Scorpio SUV worth Rs 29 lakh, 100 grams of gold, and shares in various banks.

A total of five former IPS officers contested the Bihar assembly elections this time, but only one could pull off a win.

Anand Mishra, who contested on a BJP ticket from Buxur, defeated Congress candidate Sanjay Kumar Tiwari by 28,533 votes.
