Expansion of major stations in the next five years

In view of the rapid increase in the number of railway passengers in the country, Indian Railways has started a plan to expand stations in 48 major cities in the next five years. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav (Ashwini Vaishnaw) said that this initiative is being taken with the aim of doubling the originating capacity of trains by 2030.

Balanced development of major and sub-stations

Railways’ target is not limited to just big terminals. Stations located around metropolitan cities will also be developed, so that trains are operated in a balanced manner and passengers get alternative facilities. For example, Rajendra Nagar and Danapur stations in Patna have also been included in the expansion plan.

Capacity expansion at four levels

Under this scheme, Railways will work at four major levels. New platforms, stabling lines, pit lines and shunting facilities will be expanded at existing terminals. New coaching terminals will develop in and around the cities. Apart from this, mega coaching complexes will be built, which will strengthen the maintenance and operation of trains.

Track capacity will also be increased by upgrading signaling system, multi-tracking and traffic facility works. Railways has directed zonal units to remove operational bottlenecks not just at the terminals but across the entire division.

phased implementation

The scheme will be implemented in immediate, short-term and long-term phases. Its objective is that passengers get benefits as soon as possible and crowding in trains does not become a big problem in future.
