Extreme heat havoc, change in school timings and holidays in many states
Heatwave Alert: The Meteorological Department has issued a warning that the temperature in North India may reach 44 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Due to continuously increasing heat and heat wave, the situation can become serious. Keeping this in view, special steps are being taken in many states for the safety of school children. At some places school holidays have been declared and at some places the timings have been changed.
Children’s safety is government’s priority
In view of the scorching heat, the Chhattisgarh government has declared summer vacation in all government, private and aided schools from April 20 to June 15, 2026. Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai has said that the safety of children is the biggest priority of the government.
Instructions to stay in school for one hour
School timings have been changed in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. Now schools here will start at 7:30 in the morning and continue till 12:30 in the afternoon. Teachers have been instructed to stay in the school for an additional hour. There is a possibility that similar changes may be made in other districts of the state in the coming days.

In many districts of Odisha like Balangir, Subarnapur and Kalahandi, schools and colleges have also been closed from April 18 to 21 due to extreme heat. School timings in the state have already been changed from 6:30 am to 10:30 am, so that children can avoid the scorching afternoon sun.
Action will be taken against running special classes
The Kerala government has also announced summer vacation in view of the increasing heat. Also, the Education Department has made it clear that action will be taken against running any kind of special class during the holidays. As per the instructions of some private school organizations, new timings for private schools have been implemented in many states. Under this, classes will start at 6:45 am and continue till 11:30 am, so that children can be sent home before the scorching heat.
Ban on holding classes in open spaces
To protect children from dehydration in Telangana and Uttarakhand, instructions have been given to ring water bells from time to time in schools to make them drink water. Besides, a ban has been imposed on holding classes in open spaces. Orders have also been issued to discharge children early in Anganwadi centres.
Temperature 40 degrees Celsius in Uttar Pradesh
Even in Uttar Pradesh, the temperature has crossed 40 degrees Celsius, due to which studies are being affected. Teachers organizations have demanded change in school timings. At present, schools in UP are running from 8 am to 2 pm, but there is a demand that it should be made from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. Amidst the ever-increasing heat, these steps taken by different states regarding schools across the country are considered important keeping in mind the safety of children.
