FA Bans Bentancur for Racism Against Son

FA Bans Bentancur for Racism Against Son: Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been banned from 7 matches due to a racist slur aimed at his teammate and captain, Son Heung-min.

The incident that led to the ban happened when a TV interviewer asked Bentancur for the jersey of Son. Bentancur replied that he should take the jersey from Son’s cousin as ‘they all look the same’.

It didn’t go well with FA as the association slapped a hefty £100,000 fine and a 7-match ban to Bentancur.

FA stated:

“An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview. It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute.

“It was further alleged that this constitutes an “aggravated breach”, which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin. Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent Regulatory Commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing. Its written reasons for these decisions can be seen below.”

Bentancur later apologized for his ‘very bad joke’ on social media

“Sony brother! I apologize to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke! You know what I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you, brother!”

Son later came forward to back the player by revealing that the Uruguan ‘felt really sorry and almost like cried when he apologized publicly and also personally as well’. Son expressed his love for the colleague and said that it was just a ‘mistake’ from Bentancur.

Despite the ban, Bentancur will be able to play the European games as the FA’s ban only stays in domestic matches.
