Fake Reviews Mislead Online Shoppers in India

Udaipur, April 20 (Read): With the rapid rise of online shopping, consumers in Udaipur are increasingly falling prey to misleading product reviews and fake ratings, raising concerns over product quality and trust.

Fake Reviews

Many buyers now rely heavily on star ratings and customer reviews before making purchases. However, experts warn that several sellers are manipulating these ratings by posting fake reviews or paying for positive feedback, creating a false image of product quality.

Rising Complaints from Consumers

Several consumers in the city have reported that products with 4 to 5-star ratings often fail to meet expectations after delivery. The gap between online presentation and actual product quality has led to dissatisfaction and financial loss.

Organized Fake Review Network

According to experts, a structured network of fake reviews is active across e-commerce platforms. Sellers allegedly use fake accounts or incentivised reviews to boost product ratings, directly impacting genuine buyers who rely on these reviews.

Declining Trust in Ratings

The growing trend has weakened consumer trust in online platforms. High ratings are no longer seen as a guarantee of quality, with low-grade and substandard products increasingly reaching customers.

Advisory for Buyers

Experts suggest that consumers should:

  • Avoid relying solely on star ratings
  • Carefully read negative and mixed reviews
  • Prefer products with “verified buyer” tags
  • Be cautious of repetitive or identical review language

Consumer expert Supriya Singh emphasised the need for greater awareness among buyers in Udaipur. She also called for active involvement from authorities and consumer organisations to curb the spread of fake reviews.
