Fakhar Zaman suspended: Here’s how many PSL 2026 games Lahore Qalandars’ batter will miss due to ban

PSL 2026 has barely started and Lahore Qalandars are already in the middle of a storm they did not see coming.

The Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed on Tuesday that Fakhar Zaman has been suspended after being found guilty of ball tampering during Sunday’s match against Karachi Kings at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Fakhar Zaman had denied everything and pushed for a full hearing, but match referee Roshan Mahanama reviewed the evidence and ruled against him. It has not been the cleanest start to the tournament for the defending champions, first the kit-staining-the-ball drama in the opener, and now this.

What actually happened on the PSL 2026 night

It all kicked off in the final stages of the Karachi Kings chase on Sunday. With Karachi needing 14 off the last over, Fakhar Zaman was spotted in a huddle with Haris Rauf and captain Shaheen Afridi, and footage apparently showed him doing something to the ball that he should not have been doing.

Umpire Faisal Afridi was not happy, called for an inspection, had a long conversation with his colleague on the field, and the officials then hit Lahore with a five-run penalty and replaced the ball.

That brought Karachi’s target down from 14 to nine off the final over, and they got there. So this was not just a technical violation sitting in isolation, it genuinely changed the result of the match.

The PCB hearing and what came out of it for Fakhar Zaman

Fakhar Zaman was not going to accept the charge quietly and opted for a full disciplinary hearing. Roshan Mahanama conducted the proceedings with Shaheen Afridi, team director Sameen Rana and manager Farooq Anwar all present from the Lahore side.

After going through the evidence and listening to Fakhar’s side of the story, Mahanama found him guilty of a Level 3 breach under Article 2.14 of the PSL Code of Conduct, the article specifically covering altering the condition of the ball.

Level 3 carries a minimum one-match ban and a maximum of two, and Fakhar Zaman got the maximum. He will miss the games against Multan Sultans on April 3 and Islamabad United on April 9.

He still has the option to appeal to the Technical Committee within 48 hours of receiving the written verdict, and given how hard he fought to contest the charge in the first place, that door is not completely closed.

What this means for Lahore Qalandars

Fakhar Zaman is not just any player in this Lahore lineup, he is their most experienced batter at the top of the order and someone the whole innings is built around.

Missing him for games against Multan and Islamabad, two sides who will fancy their chances against a weakened Lahore, is a real problem for Shaheen Afridi’s title defence. The defending champions have had a messy first week of the tournament and they need things to calm down quickly before the damage starts showing up in the points table.
