Shyam Benegal died at Wockart Hospital, Mumbai Central. His daughter, Pia Benegal, said that he was suffering from chronic kidney disease and had reached the last stages of the disease. His age was 90 years. At present no information has come to light regarding his funeral.

Let us tell you that Shyam Benegal's films had won 8 National Awards. He made many great films like Zubaida, The Making of the Mahatma, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero, Mandi, Aarohan, Welcome to Sajjanpur. He also received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution.

Benegal made 24 films, 45 documentaries and 1500 advertisement films in his career. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1976 and Padma Bhushan in 1991.
