Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) held their nerve in a pulsating contest to defeat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 10 runs in Match 27 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. After being put in to bat first by CSK, SRH posted a competitive 194/9 and then produced a disciplined bowling effort to restrict the visitors to 184/8 in a match that went down to the wire.
Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen sizzle with the bat
SRH’s innings was built on two outstanding knocks from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasenboth of whom scored 59 runs but in contrasting styles. Abhishek came out all guns blazing at the top, smashing 59 off just 22 balls with six boundaries and four sixes. His aggressive intent gave SRH early momentum despite losing Ishan Kishan for a duck. Travis Head chipped in with a steady 23, but it was Klaasen who anchored the middle phase with a composed 59 off 39 deliveries, ensuring SRH didn’t lose their way after the powerplay burst.
CSK bowlers fight back with timely breakthroughs
Chennai Super Kings fought back impressively in the latter half of the innings, thanks to a collective bowling effort. Anshul Kamboj was the standout performer, picking up three crucial wickets while conceding just 22 runs in his three overs. Jamie Overton also made a strong impact with three wickets, though he was slightly expensive. Mukesh Choudhary chipped in with two wickets, helping CSK pull things back after a blistering start by SRH. Despite the late wickets, SRH managed to push their total close to the 200-mark, which ultimately proved decisive.
CSK’s chase falls short despite strong middle-order effort
In response, CSK began aggressively but lost wickets at key intervals. Sanju Samson provided a quick start with a six but fell early, while Ruturaj Gaikwad couldn’t convert his start. The highlight of the chase was Ayush Mhatre’s explosive 30 off just 13 balls, which kept CSK in the hunt during the powerplay.
Matthew Short and Sarfaraz Khan then steadied the innings with knocks of 34 and 25 respectively, stitching together a crucial partnership. However, regular breakthroughs prevented CSK from building sustained momentum. Shivam Dube tried to accelerate in the middle overs with a quick 21, while Overton and Kamboj chipped in towards the end, but the required rate kept climbing.
Eshan Malinga shines as SRH defend total successfully
The turning point came through SRH’s bowling unit, led brilliantly by Eshan Malinga. The pacer delivered a match-winning spell, claiming three wickets for just 29 runs in his four overs. His ability to strike at crucial moments dented CSK’s chase significantly.
Nitish Kumar Reddy also played a key role with two wickets, while Sakib Hussain and Shivang Kumar chipped in with one wicket each. Despite Dust Hinge conceding runs, SRH’s bowlers collectively held their composure under pressure, especially in the death overs. In the end, CSK fell short by 10 runs, handing Sunrisers Hyderabad a hard-fought victory in a thrilling southern derby clash.

Sunrisers’ inexperienced bowling lineup has turned up in the last two games. Shivang Kumar has been just too good. Malinga just needs a little dry surface for his arm path to get that tail in n when he has that, he’s a proper 4-over impactful bowler.
