Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait arrested, anger among workers

Issues related to farmers have once again heated up the country’s politics. The situation has become tense after the chief spokesperson of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) and farmer leader Rakesh Tikait was detained by the police in Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar. This action took place at a time when farmers were protesting peacefully in support of their demands.

Actually, Rakesh Tikait had reached Bhubaneswar to support the ongoing farmers’ movement in Odisha. Farmers of the state had come to the capital marching on foot with their demands from March 22, 2026, where a big meeting was to be organized. Tikait was also going to participate in the same program, but before the meeting could start, the police intervened and detained him and many other farmers.

Tikait’s allegation

Tikait himself shared the video of his arrest on social media. In this video he alleged that this action has been taken on the instructions of the state government. He says that in order to suppress the voice of the farmers, they were stopped before they could reach the meeting venue.

As soon as the news of this incident spread, the stir in farmer organizations intensified. Its widespread impact was seen especially in western Uttar Pradesh. BKU workers took to the streets in Meerut and surrounding areas and started protesting. Farmers, under the leadership of District President Anurag Chaudhary, started a protest in Mawana area of Meerut district and warned that the agitation will continue until Tikait is released honorably.

Other leaders of BKU have also strongly criticized this action. He says that the government is trying to suppress the voice of farmers. The leaders also indicated that if the demands were not met, the movement would be expanded.
