Farmer’s organ donation gives new life to four patients
In a deeply moving act of generosity, a 60-year-old woman from Purandar gave a new lease of life to four patients after her family consented to organ donation when she was declared brain-dead following a road accident.
The woman and her husband, both farmers, were admitted to a city hospital with severe head injuries on February 6 after their motorcycle met with an accident. She was declared brain-dead on Sunday, and organ retrieval was carried out on Monday at Noble Hospitals and Research Centre.
Four lives transformed
Group Executive Officer Dr Sanjay Pathare said the woman’s lungs were sent to another hospital in Pune. One kidney was allocated to a hospital in Nashik, while the second kidney and liver were transplanted into patients at Noble Hospital.
“The coordinated efforts ensured timely retrieval and transplantation,” Dr Pathare said, thanking the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) for its role in organ allocation and logistics.
The woman’s husband remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment in the ICU.
A family’s selfless decision
Hospital Director Dr Divij Mane praised the family’s courage during a time of immense grief.
“We salute the family members, including her son and daughters, who consented to organ donation in such a difficult hour. Their selfless act has brought hope and healing to several families,” he said.
The kidney transplant team was led by Dr Shashikant Bhange, supported by anaesthetist Dr Geetanjali Akhade and medical staff. The liver transplant team included surgeons Dr Bipin Vibhute and Dr Smita Parakh, along with anaesthetist Dr Manish Pathak and transplant coordinators Mahesh Tupe and Ashwini Kawade.
The gesture highlights the life-saving impact of organ donation and the importance of awareness in enabling more such acts of humanity.
