Farmers protest against India-US agricultural agreement and burn copies

Sitapur- In Sitapur district, farmers demonstrated on Wednesday under the leadership of the convener of the United Kisan Morcha against the proposed India-America agricultural agreement. Registered their protest by burning copies of the agreement at Lalbagh intersection. Farmer leader Pinder Singh Sidhu reached the District Magistrate’s office and gave a memorandum to the Additional SDM. Farmer leader Pinder Singh Sidhu said that the agricultural agreement being made or proposed by the Government of India with America can have an adverse impact on the farmers, workers and agricultural system of the country.

He said that India’s agricultural system is based on small and marginal farmers, while America’s farming is dependent on multinational companies and heavy subsidies. An agreement made in such an unequal structure will push Indian farmers into unequal competition, making it more difficult for farmers to get fair prices for their crops and the domestic market will be affected by cheap imported agricultural products. Gurpal Singh, District President of Six Organization, said that this agreement can increase the dominance of multinational companies in the field of seeds, fertilizers and agricultural technology, which will create a crisis on the food security and self-reliance of the country.

District Secretary of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Morcha, Amandeep Singh, demanded that all the terms of the agreement be made public and it should be put on hold until complete protection of farmers’ interests is ensured. Along with this, demands were raised to provide legal guarantee to MSP and to make provisions to protect the interests of farmers in the import policy. Hundreds of farmers including Ajmer Singh, Nirmal Singh, Gurvinder Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Draupadi, Gurmukh Singh, Dayaram were present in the demonstration. Farmers appealed to the government to review the agreement and take necessary intervention.
