Yesterday students created ruckus on the streets of Delhi over the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Police also controlled the protesters by using force but today again Delhi Police may be tested. Today there will be demonstrations on two fronts in Delhi. On one hand students are protesting for their demands, while on the other hand farmers of Punjab are marching to Delhi today. Farmer organizations have started a new movement against the central government regarding the proposed trade agreement between India and America. In this connection, farmers are going to hold a Mahapanchayat in Delhi today i.e. on 21st July.
Farmers from many states including Punjab have left for Delhi to participate in the proposed Kisan Mahapanchayat at Kisan Ghat in Delhi. A large number of farmers from many parts of Punjab are moving towards Delhi. Desh Bachao Morcha is leading this movement. Farmer organizations say that if the government does not pay attention to their concerns, then this movement will be further intensified.

Why are the farmers protesting?
Farmer organizations say that the trade agreement being negotiated between India and America may affect agriculture, dairy, small traders and rural economy. The protesting organizations allege that the government has not held any comprehensive discussion with the farmers regarding this agreement. Farmers say that after foreign agricultural products enter the Indian market, Indian farmers will have to compete with them.
Farmers say that under the trade agreement, cheap agricultural imports from America to India will be allowed. Regarding this, farmers say that it will have a bad impact on small agricultural labourers, cattle herders and small traders. Farmer organizations claim that India is going to suffer losses in sectors like agriculture and dairy. Because of this fear, farmers are opposing it. Farmer organizations want that the government should make complete information regarding the proposed India-US trade agreement public and further decisions should be taken only after discussion with the parties related to the agriculture sector.
Farmers left for Delhi from Punjab
From July 20 itself, farmers from different districts of Punjab started leaving for Delhi in groups. Farmers first gathered at many places and then proceeded towards the capital with convoys of vehicles. Farmers from Punjab are talking about being with 550 unions. The group of farmers has left under the leadership of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti leader and ‘Desh Bachao Morcha’ coordinator Sarwan Singh Pandher. Farmer leaders leading the movement say that this is not only a movement of Punjab, but voice is being raised at the national level on issues related to agriculture and rural economy.

Warning of mass movement
Farmer leaders associated with Desh Bachao Morcha say that this is the first phase of the Mahapanchayat movement. He says that if the central government does not listen to the objections of the farmers on the proposed trade agreement, then a large-scale movement will be launched across the country. Farmer leaders have also raised the demand for the government to make the terms of the trade agreement public and discuss it with the farmers.
What preparations in Delhi?
In view of the Mahapanchayat, security arrangements have been tightened in Delhi. Police deployment has been increased in Kisan Ghat and surrounding areas. The administration is keeping an eye on the situation so that law and order is maintained during the Mahapanchayat. Along with this, traffic advisory has also been issued in Haryana.
