Fierce fight in Bengal elections, Mamata or BJP – who has the upper hand?

Kolkata. West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 have created a stir in the political circles. This time the elections for 294 seats will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4. The main contest in the race to capture power is between TMC and BJP, and both the parties are ready to show their strength at any cost.

Mamta Banerjee is trying to become Chief Minister for the fourth consecutive time, but she is facing many new challenges this time. At the same time, BJP not only wants to get majority in this election but also wants to capture power with an overwhelming majority. In 2021, BJP had won 77 seats, while TMC proved to be overwhelming on 215 seats. Compared to 2016, BJP’s lead is much more visible this time.

BJP’s aggressive campaign

BJP has set a target of winning 160 seats in this election. The party has adopted a strategy to strengthen its hold in Bengal by taking the help of Hindutva-based ideological polarization and anti-incumbency wave. The party has attracted public attention by raising issues like corruption, law and order and unemployment prominently.

Challenge in front of Mamata Banerjee

There are many big questions before Mamata Banerjee and her party TMC this time. Anti-incumbency environment, internal strife in the party, allegations of corruption and problems of deletion of voters’ names from the voter list are a cause of concern for Mamata. Especially in urban areas like Kolkata, resentment over name deletion is increasing, which may prove to be a challenge for TMC to control.

Corruption and internal factionalism

TMC has been facing allegations of corruption in the last few years. Cases like teacher recruitment scam, PDS scam and cattle smuggling have become election weapons for BJP. Apart from this, factionalism within the party has also increased. Mamta canceled the tickets of 74 MLAs and changed the seats of 15 MLAs, which may weaken the organization at the local level.

thrill of bengal elections

This time Bengal elections are not easy for any party. The clash between BJP and TMC is making this election very exciting and unpredictable. Will Mamata Banerjee return to power for the fourth time, or will BJP maintain its strong hold in Bengal this time, this question is in the eyes of the entire state. Bengal Elections 2026 is not just a fight for seats, but a fierce competition of power and strategy. The results at every stage can write a new history of the state’s politics.
