Kolkata. West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 have created a stir in the political circles. This time the elections for 294 seats will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4. Anti-incumbency environment, internal strife in the party, allegations of corruption and problems of deletion of voters’ names from the voter list are a cause of concern for Mamata. Especially in urban areas like Kolkata, resentment over name deletion is increasing, which may prove to be a challenge for TMC to control.
Corruption and internal factionalism
TMC has been facing allegations of corruption in the last few years. Cases like teacher recruitment scam, PDS scam and cattle smuggling have become election weapons for BJP. Apart from this, factionalism within the party has also increased. Mamta canceled the tickets of 74 MLAs and changed the seats of 15 MLAs, which may weaken the organization at the local level.
