FIFA World Cup 2026: Reigning champions Argentina made a great start to their title defense campaign with a 3-0 win over Algeria. The hero of this match was captain Lionel Messi, who scored the first World Cup hat-trick of his career in his 200th international match. 38-year-old Messi equaled the record of most goals in World Cup history by scoring three goals and made many new records in his name.

In the match played against Algeria, Messi played his 200th match in Argentina jersey. The feat was special in itself, but he made it even more memorable. At the age of 38 years and 357 days, Messi scored a brilliant hat-trick to lead the team to victory and added a new chapter in world football.

Giants equal in terms of goals in the World Cup
With three goals against Algeria, Messi’s World Cup goals tally reached 16. With this he equaled the record of Germany’s great striker Miroslav Klose. Messi became South America’s most successful World Cup goal scorer, leaving behind Brazilian legend Ronaldo (15 goals).

Not only this, at the age of 38, the record of becoming the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup has also been registered in his name.

Great career for Argentina
Messi has had a wonderful journey for the Argentina national team. In 200 matches, he has scored 117 goals and also recorded 61 assists. Under his captaincy, Argentina won big titles like 2022 World Cup, Copa America 2021, Copa America 2024 and Finalsima.

Messi has also become the first player to play six editions of the World Cup. Apart from this, he also holds the record of playing most World Cup matches as captain.

In the Qatar World Cup 2022, he created a unique record by scoring goals in every stage from the group stage to the final. He is the only footballer in the world to win the World Cup Golden Ball twice.
