Mexico City, June 12. Hosts Mexico recorded a resounding 2-0 win over South Africa in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 played at the Estadio Azteca Stadium at midnight IST on Thursday. The match ended with three red cards and much controversy, with Mexico proving their superiority despite some scattered play in the second half. Mexico was leading 1–0 at half-time. Julian Quinones scored in the ninth minute. He took advantage of a big mistake by Yaya Sithole and sent the ball through the legs of Ronwen Williams into the goal. Mexico dominated the early stages and created a number of chances through Raul Jimenez and Quinones, while South Africa could only muster a weak header from Foster on attack.
South Korea defeated Czechia 2-1
The second match of FIFA World Cup 2026 was played between South Korea and Czech Republic at Guadalajara Stadium on Friday morning at 7:30 Indian time. Where in a close contest the South Korean team managed to win 2-1. The excitement of the match can be gauged from the fact that no goals were scored from both the teams in the first half. But in the second half, both the teams picked up the pace and started playing aggressively. The first goal during the match was seen from the Czech Republic.
