Washington. Preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 are in full swing. The full schedule of the tournament was released at a function organized in Washington DC on Saturday. The upcoming World Cup will be played jointly in the United States of America, Mexico and Canada. For the first time, 48 teams will participate in the Football World Cup, making it the largest World Cup in history.
The 38-day long tournament will begin on June 11 at the prestigious Estadio Azteca stadium in Mexico City, where Mexico and South Africa will face each other in the opening match. This stadium has hosted the opening matches of the 1970 and 1986 World Cups. The United States will begin its campaign against Paraguay in Los Angeles the next day, on June 12, while the Canadian team will play its first match against the winner of the UEFA Playoff-A in Toronto.
Argentina team led by Lionel Messi is in Group J. Defending champions Argentina will face Algeria in their first match, after which they will face Austria and Jordan. Fans will get to see many big matches in the group stage itself. These include matches of Brazil vs Morocco, Germany vs Curacao, Netherlands vs Japan, England vs Croatia. The tournament matches will be played in cities like New York, Houston, Miami, Vancouver, Dallas, Guadalajara.
The 48 teams participating in the tournament have been divided into 12 groups of 4 each. Then 32 teams will reach the Round of 32, through which the knockout round will begin. The eyes of the whole world are fixed on 19 July 2026, when the new champion of world football will be decided at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
