FIGC ask Gattuso to stay in charge of Italy for 2 more games

According to La Journal dello Sport, the Italian FA has requested that Gennaro Gattuso remain as coach for the June friendlies, with the Azzurri boss set to respond next week.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina and Italy’s Delegation Chief Gianluigi Buffon resigned after the Azzurri’s World Cup play-off elimination, but Gattuso’s time with La Nazionale may not be over yet.

As reported by Gazzetta, in fact, the Azzurri boss has been asked by the Federation to remain in charge until the end of his contract in June, taking charge of two friendly games that month.

According to Gazzetta, Gattuso hasn’t yet decided his future and will only confirm his decision after Easter, so next week.

Gattuso signed a one-year contract worth €800,000 in June 2025. Stepping down now would cost him around €120,000/150,000, but the matter is by no means a financial one.

Regardless of any decision over his short-term future, it’s unlikely that Gattuso will remain in charge of La Nazionale beyond June after such a disappointing result in the World Cup play-off.

The new FIGC President, to be voted on June 22, will appoint the new Azzurri boss, and if Gattuso refuses to remain in charge until June, U21 coach Silvio Baldini will oversee the first team for the next two friendlies in June.
