Indian women’s hockey team has created history by winning the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2025-26 (FIH Nations Cup 2026). India beat hosts New Zealand 2-0 in a thrilling final at Auckland on Sunday (June 21). In this match, the Indian players played aggressively from the start and did not give any chance to the opposition team to make a comeback. After this strong and historic performance, Hockey India announced a huge prize money for the entire team and support staff.

India took the lead in the first quarter itself

Early in the match, hosts New Zealand controlled the ball and looked to take an early lead. However, the Indian team grabbed their first big chance of the match when Navneet Kaur won a penalty corner. Navneet converted the set-piece into a goal with a powerful strike in the fourth minute of the match to give India a 1-0 lead. The Indian team then displayed excellent transition play and continued to challenge the New Zealand defense with their aggressiveness. India doubled their lead from the fifth penalty corner of the first quarter. In the 15th minute, Sunilita Toppo skilfully blocked a powerful shot from Deepika and put the ball into the net to make the score 2-0.

India dominated the entire tournament

India has won the Nations Cup 2026 title without losing a single match in the entire tournament. Team India first won their group matches against USA, Japan and Uruguay by one goal each to top the group. They then defeated Chile 6-0 in the semi-final to enter the final. This is India’s second title in the Nations Cup, previously they had won the first title in the tournament in 2022.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian women’s hockey team for winning the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup title. He said that he congratulated the Indian hockey players for their victory which made the nation proud and happy. The players displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the tournament. He also hoped that this success will inspire many youths in the country to play hockey.

In honor of Team India’s title win, Hockey India has announced a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh for each player and Rs 1.5 lakh for each support staff member.
