Jhansi. jhansi medical college incident: The major accident that happened at Rani Lakshmibai Medical College, Jhansi on Friday night is heart-wrenching. It also highlights the flaws in the system. 10 babies died in a sudden fire in the neonatal NICU ward. There is mourning in many families. 17 children have been injured in this accident and they are undergoing treatment.
Now pictures and some videos of the fire have surfaced. These are also going viral on social media. These are mind boggling. In the video, people are running with children in their lap. The scene of screaming parents, fire, stampede and nursing staff risking their lives to lift and take out the children (jhansi medical college incident) is shocking. Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) Sachin Mahor said about the incident that a total of 54 newborns were admitted in the NICU. At around 10:30 pm, a massive fire broke out due to a short circuit in the oxygen concentrator. Due to the rapid spread of the fire, there has been massive damage to the indoor unit.
Fire alarms and water sprinklers were not working, delaying rescue operations. The fire extinguishers installed in the hospital had expired four years ago. People present at the spot said that the cylinder was not working. There was no alternative system to extinguish the fire.
As the fire spread rapidly, the nursing staff as well as some parents picked up their children and took them to a safe place. Many children were shifted to another unit, but the fire was so severe that 10 children could not be saved from the fire. Many people have also been injured.
