Netanyahu said – had already warned the government
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has blamed the Australian government’s policies for the attack. According to Netanyahu, the government’s policies have added fuel to the fire.
Netanyahu said he had already warned Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese that the government’s policies were promoting anti-Semitism in the country. According to Netanyahu, he had informed Albanese about this by writing a letter on August 17.
Netanyahu said after the Bondi Beach attack that he had warned earlier, but the government did nothing, resulting in this terrible attack.
- Recognizing the Palestinian State: Australia had decided to formally recognize the Palestinian state at the United Nations in August-September 2025. Netanyahu, in a letter to Albanese dated August 17, 2025, said the move amounted to “adding fuel to the fire of anti-Semitism.” According to him, it promotes terrorists and spreads hatred against Jews in Australia.
- Not taking necessary action on anti-Semitic incidents: Netanyahu alleges that anti-Semitic attacks in Australia increased after the Gaza war (from October 2023), but the government did not take strong steps to stop them. They call it the weakness of the government.

Jews celebrating Hanukkah festival were targeted
People of the Jewish community were celebrating Hanukkah festival at the time of the incident on Sunday. This is a special festival of the Jews, which started from 14 December.
The Hanukkah festival to be held in Melbourne was canceled after the mass shooting incident at Bondi Beach.
The total Jewish population of Australia is approximately 117,000–120,000, of which about half (53,000 to 60,000) live in the city of Melbourne.
The 2021 census recorded 46,000 Jews in Victoria (of which Melbourne is the core), but experts estimate the real number to be closer to 60,000.
Leaders around the world expressed condolences….
Indian PM Narendra Modi: I strongly condemn the horrific terrorist attack in Australia, which targeted people celebrating the first day of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah. On behalf of the people of India, I express my sympathy and condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. India supports the fight against terrorism.
British PM Keir Starmer: The news of the firing is extremely disturbing. This is an anti-Jewish terrorist attack. We condemn it.
US President Donald Trump: We can only pray for the victims. This was a very terrible incident. People need not worry. They should celebrate the festival with pride, and they should be proud of who they are.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: The policies of the Australian government are responsible for this attack. Government policies added fuel to the fire. We had warned earlier, but necessary steps were not taken.
Mass shooting in Australia after 29 years
Mass shootings are not common in Australia. After a tragic attack in Port Arthur in 1996, strict gun laws were implemented here. In that attack, a single attacker killed 35 people.
Buying a gun in Australia requires going through a very strict vetting process. Although gun crimes do occur here too, they are usually targeted at a specific individual and are limited in scope.
According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, a total of 31 gun homicides were recorded in Australia during 2023–24. This is the most recent data so far.
Large-scale attacks rarely happen here. One such recent incident took place in the eastern area of Sydney. In April 2024, a man attacked and killed six people with a knife at the Westfield Shopping Center in Bondi Junction. The attacker was shot dead on the spot. It was told that the person already had mental health problems.
