First hydrogen train ready for launch, PM Modi shared photo

New Delhi, 15 July. A new chapter is going to be added in the history of Indian Railways. The country’s first green hydrogen-powered train is ready for launch. This is being considered a big step towards clean, green and zero-emission transportation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted pictures of the hydrogen train on his official Facebook account and wrote, ‘India’s first hydrogen-powered train is going to start from Haryana.’ After his post, enthusiasm among people regarding this project has increased.

Preparation to start 35 more hydrogen trains in future

The project is part of the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ initiative of Indian Railways. Under this scheme, Railways is preparing to introduce 35 more hydrogen trains in the future, to provide an environment-friendly alternative to the old diesel engines running on heritage and rural routes.

The 10-coach hydrogen-powered DEMU set has a total of 682 seats and passenger capacity of 2600.

The new train has been designed as a 10-coach hydrogen-powered DEMU set. It has 682 seats while having a total carrying capacity of 2,600 passengers. The train had achieved speeds higher than this during testing, but for regular operations its maximum speed has been fixed at 75 kilometers per hour. Since this is still a pilot project, it is being launched in a controlled and careful manner.

Hydrogen trains work like power plants on the go

According to media reports, hydrogen trains work like a power plant on the go. The hydrogen gas present in these and the oxygen obtained from the external environment are mixed inside the fuel cell. This chemical process produces electricity, which runs the train’s electric motors. No harmful smoke is released in this entire process. Instead only water vapor and heat are produced.

The objective of these trains is to make the railway network free from carbon emissions.

According to experts, these trains aim to make the railway network free from carbon emissions, especially on routes where laying overhead power lines is difficult or extremely expensive. Hydrogen trains offer the same environmental benefits as electric trains without the need for major infrastructure and can be refueled and run in just a few minutes like diesel trains.
