France’s big decision amid Iran war, announcement to increase nuclear stockpile for the first time after almost 4 decades
France to Increase Size of Nuclear Arsenal: Amid the ongoing war in the Middle East and global security concerns, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that France will increase the number of its nuclear weapons. This will be the first time in decades that France will increase its nuclear arsenal. However, he did not say by how much the number would be increased. France is currently thought to have less than 300 nuclear warheads.
Macron made the announcement from the Île Longue military base in northwestern France, which is the main base for France’s ballistic missile submarines. “I have decided to increase the number of combat weapons in my arsenal,” he said.
Emphasis on Europe’s security
This speech of Macron has come at a time when new concerns about security are emerging in Europe, especially amid the changing equations with America. He indicated that the global situation is changing rapidly and Europe needs to strengthen its security architecture.
Cooperation and new military strategy
France also indicated it may temporarily deploy aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons to allied countries. Also, France will now work with Germany and the United Kingdom on long-range missile projects. This decision has come at a time when conflicts and military tensions are increasing in many parts of the world. While on one hand it is being considered a step towards strengthening the security of Europe, on the other hand it can also give rise to new concerns regarding the global arms race.
