Ravichandran Ashwin celebrates after scoring a hundred against Bangladesh in 1st Test.

New Delhi: The Indian cricket team scripted history in Chennai on a Sunday morning as they registered more wins than losses in Test cricket for the first time since 1932 following an emphatic 280-run victory over Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. With this victory, India now have 179 wins out of 580 Test matches. India lost 178 times while drew 222 matches and one game ended in a tie.

Only England, Australia, Pakistan and South Africa among the heavyweights have more Test wins than losses. While Australia have 414 wins and 232 losses, England registered 397 wins as compared to 325 losses in Tests. Pakistan have won 148 games and lost 144 times in the longest format. South Africa have 179 wins and 161 losses.

Maintaining a clean slate against the Asian neighbours, India now lead the two-match series 1-0. Starting from their overnight 158/4, Bangladesh were bundled out for 234 in their second innings as Ravichandran Ashwin scythed through their line-up (6/88). Ravindra Jadeja supported him with a three-wicket haul (3/58).

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto waged a lone battle for the visitors with a sparkling 82 (127b, 8×4, 3×6), but there was hardly any meaningful support for him from his colleagues. There was nothing much on the surface for the spinners but Ashwin, who possesses a scientist’s acumen, does not need such generosity from the deck or conditions.

The Chennai man put into use his ability to find acute angles from around the wicket to left-handers to optimum effect. In the process, Ashwin completed his 37th five-wicket haul, equalling Australian legend Shane Warne, nipping the stay of Mehidy Hasan Miraz (8), who lobbed a catch to Jadeja at long-on.

Ashwin also went past New Zealand legend Richard Hadlee’s five-wicket haul tally – 36. It was also the fourth time the veteran all-rounder took five-wicket or more in a Test match alongside a hundred.
