AI becomes rapist! After all, how did technology rape a woman?

A Florida woman pleaded no contest this week to charges of making a false report to law enforcement. According to police, the woman admitted that she had used artificial intelligence (AI) in a fake call made to 911 in October. She had claimed that a man entered her house and sexually assaulted her. These actions resemble a disturbing new TikTok trend.

Brooke Taylor Shinault, 32, called St. Petersburg police on October 7 and claimed an unknown man broke into her home and attacked her. When officers arrived at the scene, they found no evidence of a crime. However, Shinault showed them a photo of a man he described as suspicious. On the second call, Shinault told police she had been sexually assaulted.

“During that second call, we were able to contact one of our detectives upstairs so they could look at the evidence we had and give our officers on scene some advice on how to proceed with this case,” Ashley Limardo, a public information specialist with the department, told Fox 13 at the time. He added, “As soon as the detective saw the photos, he immediately recognized that this was a trend we were seeing online.”

Use of AI-generated images

Police later wrote in charging documents, “It was later discovered that the image was generated by AI using ChatGPT.” The photo, given to police, was found in a deleted folder and appears to have been taken “a few days before he was charged with the theft and assault.”

According to a police report obtained by crime news site The Smoking Gun, a detective working on the case believed Shinault was taking part in the “AI homeless man” TikTok prank. However, Shinault said she “doesn’t follow any trends.”

According to the document, she admitted that she lied about the home invasion and rape because she was suffering from depression and wanted attention.

danger of trend

Shinault has been placed on probation and ordered to pay a fine.

As part of a trend that has garnered millions of views on TikTok, social media users use AI to create photo-realistic pictures of homeless people inside their homes to shock family members or friends.

The prank has led to hoax calls to police in Texas, Washington and England, and law enforcement agencies have warned the public that joining the trend is inhumane to homeless people and could lead to a drain on resources to prosecute real crimes.
