Fog disrupted the programme! Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter could not land in Taherpur, returned to Kolkata airport
Kolkata: The weather disrupted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s program in West Bengal on Saturday. Due to dense fog and very low visibility, the Prime Minister’s helicopter could not land at the designated spot and had to return to Kolkata airport. This incident came to light during an attempt to land at Taherpur helipad in the state, where the weather suddenly turned worse.
Dense fog spoiled the landing plan
According to the information received, there was dense fog in many parts of West Bengal on Saturday afternoon. Visibility in Taherpur area had become so low that the chances of the helicopter landing safely were almost lost. Keeping the safety protocols in mind, the pilot decided not to take the risk of landing.
Helicopter hovering over the helipad
According to an official, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter kept hovering over the Taherpur helipad for some time. During this period, there was constant contact between the pilot and air traffic control and the weather conditions were monitored. However, there was no improvement in visibility, after which it was decided to turn the helicopter back, giving priority to safety.
Safe return to Kolkata airport
After failing to land on the helipad, the Prime Minister’s helicopter took a U-turn and returned safely to Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. Officials said that this decision was taken completely as per standard security procedures and no risk was taken in it.
Weather becomes a big challenge
According to the Meteorological Department, along with winter, dense fog is being seen in West Bengal and surrounding areas. Visibility is being recorded very low especially in the morning and afternoon. Such conditions are challenging for air operations, especially during VIP movements, where safety standards are not compromised.
Prime Minister’s security is paramount
Security agencies do not take risks under any circumstances during the Prime Minister’s visit. The rules regarding helicopter landing in bad weather are very strict. Officials say that if visibility falls below prescribed standards, landing is not allowed, no matter how important the event is.
impact on programs
The return of the helicopter also affected the Prime Minister’s further programs. However, the administration considered alternative arrangements and made further plans according to the situation. Officials clarified that the programs can be re-arranged as soon as the weather becomes normal.
Such cases have come to light earlier also
This is not the first time that VIP flights have been canceled or diverted due to dense fog or bad weather. During the winter season, fog has been affecting air, rail and road traffic in many parts of the country. From security point of view, such decisions are considered common and necessary.
