Food safety challenges in India

India is one of the largest agricultural producing countries in the world. Due to Green Revolution, White Revolution and modern agricultural policies, the country has become self-sufficient in food grain production. With the help of Public Distribution System, National Food Security Program and other welfare schemes, work is being done to provide food grains to crores of citizens. Despite this, many challenges remain before food security. Lack of storage facilities, lack of cold storage, food wastage, adulteration, hygiene related problems and lack of awareness are still a matter of serious concern.

India and Food Policy (Food Safety Guidelines)

Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 was enacted to strengthen food safety in India. Under this, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established. FSSAI conducts food standards setting, licensing, inspection, quality testing, development of lab networks and consumer awareness programs. Apart from this, Consumer Protection Law (Consumer Protection Law, 2019) also provides citizens the right to get safe food. The mandate of CPL is to make effective laws to protect the interests of consumers, prevent fraud and curb misleading advertisements.
