Company fined Rs 10,000 for carrying a carry bag worth Rs 6! The court gave a big decision in favor of the customer
Delhi Carry Bag Dispute: It is common to pay extra charges for carry bags after shopping in any mall, showroom or any big stores. Most of the customers pay the money without thinking anything and walk out of the mall or shop. But, what will happen in that case, if an additional charge for carry bag is added to the shopping bill of a customer without giving any information to him? A similar case has come to light from the country’s capital Delhi. Where the dispute that started over a carry bag worth Rs 6 reached the South Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC).
While giving its decision, the Commission accepted the customer’s complaint as true and ordered a famous footwear company to pay a fine of Rs 10,000. Now this matter is much discussed regarding the rights of customers.
What is this whole matter?
Let us tell you that this entire matter happened three years ago from today i.e. 2023. According to media reports, a woman resident of Delhi had bought shoes worth about Rs 1,500 from a renowned footwear store. After shopping, when the bill given to her by the store employees revealed that carry bag An additional Rs 6 has also been added. However, in the complaint of the female customer, she said that there was no information given anywhere in the store that the customers will have to pay Rs 6 extra for the carry bag. There was no board inside the store to indicate the additional charges for carry bags. The female customer’s argument was that if she had known about this additional charge in advance, she would have brought her bag separately.
What did the commission say in the decision?
On the basis of all logic and information South Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Admitted that charging for carry bags is not wrong, but the customer should be informed about it in advance. The Commission clearly stated in its decision that the dispute was not about the extra Rs 6 for the carry bag, but about not giving advance information to the customers. The Commission said that when the customer is not aware of the charges before shopping, he is not able to take an informed decision. For this reason this complaint was considered correct.
The company will compensate the customer
While giving its decision, the Commission has asked the company to pay Rs 10,000 as fine to the customer. This includes compensation as well as all expenses related to the case. The Commission also clarified that every customer has the right to know how much and why he has to pay for what.

What did the company say in clarification?
The company appearing before the Commission argued that the carry bag given after shopping is a separate product. The company said that the charge for the carry bag was clearly shown in the bill. Along with this, it was also said that the bag was given after the consent of the customer. However, the Commission did not find this argument sufficient, because the main issue of dispute was not the taking of money, but the non-disclosure of information in advance.
