‘Forced to go to toilet on foot’, RG creates ruckus over patient’s death in hospital
At the Government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, a patient suffering from a serious illness did not get a wheelchair or stretcher on time, due to which he had to walk to the toilet. Because of this he died on the way. The family of Nimta resident Vishwajeet Samanta alleges that the hospital’s mismanagement took the life of their patient.
Vishwajit Samanta was having difficulty in breathing in the early hours of Monday and his nose was also bleeding. The family members immediately took him to the trauma care unit of the hospital. The doctors there gave him initial treatment and asked the family to wait for a while until the paperwork for admitting the patient was completed. Meanwhile, Vishwajeet needed to go to the toilet.

no wheelchair found
The patient’s condition was so bad that he was not even able to stand on his feet. His son and relatives repeatedly pleaded with the hospital staff to provide him a wheelchair or trolley but no one helped him. The patient toilet inside the hospital was closed due to repairs and the staff toilet was not allowed to be used. They were forced to go to a private ‘pay and use’ toilet outside the hospital.
The patient’s son told that under compulsion he started taking his father on foot towards the outside toilet. That toilet was on the first floor. As Vishwajeet was trying to climb the stairs, he suddenly fell. He was immediately taken back to the emergency department, where doctors declared him dead. The family says that if the hospital had given him a wheelchair, he might have been alive today.
What did the administration say?
Senior hospital official Saptarshi Chatterjee admitted that the toilet built for emergency patients is currently closed due to work. MLA Atin Ghosh has also expressed strong displeasure on this matter. He said that this is a huge negligence of the hospital. If the patient toilet was closed, the seriously ill patient should have been allowed to use the toilet used by doctors or nurses. It was completely wrong to send him out in this condition.

Old incidents and police investigation
Police have registered a case in this matter and started investigation. Let us tell you that this is not the first case of negligence in this hospital. Recently on March 20, a person lost his life after getting trapped in a lift of the same hospital, in which five people have been arrested. These incidents are raising questions on the security arrangements of the hospital.
