Foreign workers climb through window to escape fire at Nha Trang restaurant

Five foreign restaurant workers climbed through a side window to escape a fire in Nha Trang’s tourist quarter on April 29, after the rolling front door of the building where they worked and lived jammed shut as smoke filled the interior.

The fire broke out around 7 a.m. when a wall-mounted television caught fire near the mezzanine of the single-story restaurant on Nguyen Thien Thuat Street in Nha Trang, a popular beach city in central Vietnam.

Smoke spread rapidly through the premises, which cover more than 100 sq.m. After failing to lift the rolling door, the five employees inside decided to gather their belongings and force their way out through the side opening more than 2 meters above the ground.

Khanh Hoa Provincial Police’s fire and rescue unit deployed two trucks and dozens of officers to the scene, breaking through the rolling door to bring the blaze under control and inspect the interior.

Initial investigation indicated that the television had short-circuited, blackening one corner of the wall.

The restaurant had not yet opened for business when the fire started.

A few of the workers sustained minor scratches during the escape, but no one was seriously injured.

According to the Nha Trang Ward People’s Committee, the restaurant is owned by a Vietnamese national who employs foreign workers as servers.

The five employees communicate in English and Russian and live on the premises.

Nguyen Thien Thuat Street is a popular strip lined with restaurants, bars and budget hotels, widely known as the “Western quarter” of Nha Trang.

The coastal city has long been a major destination for foreign visitors, particularly from Russia, with Russian-language signage common across the area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
