What is milk-soda?
Milk-soda is a very easy drink. It is mixed with cold milk and lemon-lime soda such as Sprite or 7-Up. Mixing both in equal quantity gives a frothy and sweet taste. It gives freshness in summer, because the fizz of soda reduces the heaviness of milk. Adding too much soda may curdle the milk, so mix carefully. Sometimes Rooh Afza is also added to it.
History before partition
This drink is not new. It originated in Victorian England and reached India during the British Raj. It was sold on a roadside cart in undivided Punjab. It was very popular before the advent of bottled cold drinks. In Pakistan after the partition of 1947, it is consumed extensively during Iftar during Ramzan, as it hydrates the body quickly.
Even today street vendors make it in Lahore and Karachi. In India it is still found in areas like Punjab, Old Delhi and Amritsar.
