The last rites of Vijaypat Singhania will be performed at Chandanwadi in Mumbai on Sunday at 3 pm. His bereaved family includes his wife Ashadevi Singhania and children Madhupati Singhania, Shefali Ruia and Gautam Singhania.
2006 Was awarded Padma Bhushan in
Vijaypat Singhania was born in October, 1938. He was the chairman of Raymond Group from 1980 to 2015. He had an honorary PhD degree from the London Institute of Technology and Research. Furthermore, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2006. He was an avid aviator and holds the record for the highest flight in a hot air balloon. His thrilling flying experiences are captured in his book published in 2005.
After assuming command in 1980, Raymond was given a new identity.
Vijaypat Singhania took over the reins of Raymond in 1980. He inherited a business that was respected, but had not achieved its full identity and potential. There was a tremendous change in this group under the leadership of Vijaypat. They moved beyond the production of traditional woolen fabrics and expanded into synthetic fabrics, denim and even high-precision engineering. By the 1990s, Raymond had become synonymous with the complete man. His ability to strike a balance between mass production and excellent quality ensured that the Raymond name remained a strong pillar of the Indian economy for decades.

Fought a legal battle with his son
There was also a dispute regarding property between Vijaypat Singhania and his son Gautam. The dispute began in 2015, when Vijaypat handed over his 37% stake to his son Gautam Singhania. He claimed that under a family agreement of 2007, he was to get a luxurious flat in JK House in Malabar Hill, Mumbai, the price of which was fixed much below the market. But the company board opposed this deal and called it against the company’s assets.
As the controversy escalated, the board also withdrew the post of Chairman Emeritus from Vijaypat Singhania. Vijaypat then alleged that he was made homeless. At the same time, Gautam Singhania, the current chairman of Raymond Group, has rejected all the allegations against him from time to time.
